History at Swainswick
At Swainswick, we intend to provide an exciting, rich and engaging history curriculum which will encourage our pupils to foster a passion and curiosity for history and supports children in gaining an understanding of how the past has influenced our lives today. We will teach children the skills to be a good historian including how to research and gather information, develop enquiry skills and how to analyse information and its reliability. We are fortunate to have a local area with a rich and diverse history and believe that educational visits linked to historical study enrich and stimulate pupils’ learning by bringing to life classroom knowledge
We have planned our curriculum carefully so pupils acquire knowledge of a range of different cultures and traditions and learn tolerance and understanding of other people and environments. This planning encourages a balance of core knowledge (facts, location, names, vocabulary) and a sense of place (senses, emotions, values, opinions) in order to develop a knowledge and understanding of history as well as how people and places are influenced by key events of the past. .
Our termly topics are based on either history or geography and these topics are woven throughout the curriculum each term to create meaningful links between subjects. Through this, children can develop the concept of change over time, learn about major issues and significant people of the past, along with different views, values and attitudes and develop an awareness of different societies and cultures throughout history.
Working in line with the National Curriculum, at EYFS and KS1, our curriculum focuses on significant events, people and places in our locality and changes within living memory.
At KS2, children delve deeper into British, local and World History, investigating Early Civilizations, and explore connections, contrasts ad trends over time. They will understand that our knowledge is constructed from a range of sources, investigate their own lines of enquiry about significant people or events, and will become chronologically secure with their historical knowledge and understanding of local and world history.
Where appropriate, our curriculum drivers (well-being, effective communication, creativity and expression and global responsibility) are woven throughout our History curriculum to enhance learning and promote positive attitudes to learning which reflects the values and skills needed to promote responsibility for life-long learning and success.
