Our art curriculum

At Swainswick, our aim is to provide a high quality Art and Design curriculum which engages, inspires and challenges pupils. It should enable children to experiment, invent, and create their own work of art by providing them with the knowledge and skills they need.

Where appropriate, our curriculum drivers (well-being, effective communication, creativity and expression and global responsibility) are woven throughout our Art and Design curriculum to enhance learning and promote positive attitudes to learning which reflects the values and skills needed to promote responsibility for life-long learning and success.

Our curriculum is linked closely our termly topics, which provides historical and geographical context to help children to understand the world around them.

What they learn can help them develop as artists, and assists children to think creatively and express their own unique style within a celebration of their identity.

To fully implement a creative curriculum, we ensure that Art and Design is taught as part of a half-termly or termly topic. These cross –curricular links allow children to deepen their understanding across the curriculum in context.

We provide every child with are range of opportunities to learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, textiles sculpture through the exploration of an artist, where children explore existing art before creating their own.

We use a concept-based curriculum and ensure our units are planned to engage, developing progress within featured concepts creating a love of Art and Design in which everyone is an artist and there is no right or wrong answer.
